Risk-based test planning

How much testing is enough?

Decide what to test first, how deeply to test it and where manual and automated testing effort will create the most value.

Whether you test hands-on, build automated checks or lead the test approach, RiskRover keeps business and product risk, strategy, effort and execution connected.

One checkout change. A reasoned test plan.

An established retailer adds a new payment provider. The existing product and its risks stay in view while the team focuses testing on the change. Follow the decisions from familiar templates to a reviewable plan.

Choose what the team needs to check.

Start with the Basic test-level template: Unit, Integration, System and Acceptance. Use the ISO 25010:2011 quality template with its standard descriptions, then link relevant qualities to components at each level.

Turn the change into testable scope.

Keep the complete Product Breakdown Structure (PBS): catalog, checkout, customer accounts, orders and operational integrations. Add Payment Provider Integration and Payment Status Callbacks under Checkout, alongside existing components.

Make the reason for testing visible.

With Pro, the team inherits reviewed risks from the existing product baseline. After confirming they still apply, only the two new components need initial scoring. For payment functionality at System level, likelihood 3 and impact 5 give score 15, Class A.

Inheritance avoids starting over. Review existing ratings when the change affects their assumptions; unchanged components keep their A, B or C classes.

Give testers a decision they can use.

The team chooses Deep (3) testing for the new payment integration. Decision Table Testing covers approval, decline and cancellation rules; State Transition Testing covers pending, paid and failed orders. Existing components receive focused regression checks.

Put an explainable estimate behind it.

Most effort goes to the two new components. Payment functionality at System level uses 8 × 1.5 × 1.5 × 1 = 18 hours. Existing A, B and C components retain their risk ratings but receive 1.8 hours each for a smaller, simpler regression scope.

Bring the reasoning into the review.

Review the effort and budget sections together: substantial coverage of the new payment components, a smaller regression allowance for the existing product, and the activity and role allocations behind the total. The plan includes all four test levels.

For individual builders

Building with AI? Give your testing a direction.

Your assistant can help you write code. RiskRover gives it the product scope, risks and test priorities to ask better questions about that code.

Use Builder to draft a product breakdown, compare existing tests with your risk analysis, and review planning changes before saving them. One user, all eight planning steps, plus MCP access.

Stop rebuilding your test approach from scattered information.

Requirements live in one place. Risks in another. The strategy ends up in Word. Execution moves into Jira or Azure DevOps. When scope, timing or budget changes, somebody has to reconstruct how all those decisions fit together.

RiskRover keeps that reasoning with the project.

The testing reality

Why risk-based prioritization matters

Most teams cannot test everything. The important question is whether the trade-offs are deliberate, business-driven and visible to the people doing the work.

Get control of where testing effort goes.

01

Focus effort where it matters

Not every part of a product deserves the same amount of testing. Make the differences explicit.

02

Give testers clear direction

Show what deserves attention, how deeply it should be tested and which approaches are relevant.

03

Know what testing will require

Make effort, roles, capacity and budget visible before execution begins.

04

Explain where you stand

Keep strategy, execution and remaining concerns connected so project discussions have context.

Work as a team

Turn test workshops into actual test work.

Bring product knowledge into the testing discussion. Agree priorities together, then give testers the scope, depth and techniques they need to start.

Who is RiskRover built for?

Test Leads & Managers

Set the test direction — and be ready to explain it.

Turn product risk into a clear test strategy, effort and budget. RiskRover helps you steer testers, answer stakeholder questions and show sponsors where testing time and money are going.

Testers & Automation Engineers

Start with direction — then apply your judgement.

Focus manual, exploratory and automated testing using visible product risk, testing depth and relevant techniques instead of reconstructing priorities from tickets and meetings.

Project Teams

Turn product knowledge into practical test work.

Turn shared workshop decisions into a practical test direction, then carry the supported product and risk structure into RiskRover execution and supported test repositories.

Fits your toolchain

Keep the tools your team already uses.

RiskRover coordinates test execution while your connected tools keep ownership of the delivery or test-case state they already manage.

Why RiskRover

Built from real test-management experience.

RiskRover was built around a recurring project problem: important testing decisions are made in workshops, documents and spreadsheets, then lose their context once execution begins.

The product creates a better way to keep that thinking connected without pretending that software replaces professional judgement.

Get testing under control

Your testing time is limited. Make sure it goes to the right places.

Use RiskRover to bring structure to what should be tested, how deeply, with what effort and why.
